Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan is treated to a fairly substantial update. While we never complained that the 3.8-liter V6 was down on power, the 2012 V6 gains direct injection and a whopping 43 more horsepower. The 4.6-liter V8 carries over, and a sportier 5.0-liter R-Spec model expands the range. All three engines now use an eight-speed automatic.
But the Genesis’ updates go beyond engines and horsepower. Hyundai tweaked the car’s handling and ride. The tires are now Michelins instead of the Dunlop SP Sport 5000s on our 2009 V6 model. The options structure is different, too. While there used to be separate packages for touch-screen navigation and a sunroof those two big features are now bundled together into one all-encompassing $4,800 Premium Package. A $4,000 Technology Package includes various electronic safety aids, as well as yet another navigation system that uses an annoying iDrive/MMI-like controller. That’s pretty much it for options.
That means a Genesis V6 with a sunroof is no longer a $36,300 car like the 2011 model. Our 2012 Genesis V6 with the Premium Package stickered for $39,850—still a lot of car for the money. Although it’s tempting to say that the Genesis is a BMW 5 Series-sized car for 3 Series money, the reality is that you can just barely get a 328i with navigation and a sunroof for under $40,000.
It’s still annoying that Hyundai makes you pay $35 for a special cable to get full iPod connectivity on a nearly-$40,000 car. When it comes time to negotiate, ask the dealer to throw one in with the car.
